Expansion joints are a type of mechanical device that absorb movement, vibration and expansion or contraction in piping systems, ductwork and other structures. They are used to ensure thermal expansion, mechanical forces or vibrations do not cause damage. Expansion joints are employed in numerous industries such as construction, power generation processing, petrochemical process, HVAC terminal units and marine application.

Where Are Expansion Joints Used?

  • Piping Systems – Thermal Expansion - Expansion joints are used in industries where it is typical for pipelines to expand and contract due to temperature variations, such as power plants; within petrochemical facilities; or on steam systems. The pressure that results from temperature changes can cause pipes to break, bend out of shape or even make them ineffective; this is why you need expansion joints.
  • Vibration Dampening The Pumps Or Compressors - They may be used with pumps, compressors and other mechanical equipment so that vibration in these pieces of machinery will not transmit to the building. This helps prolong the life of connected piping systems by reducing fatigue, potential for cracks and leaks.
  • Ducting and Exhaust Systems - Fabric expansion joints are ideal in ventilation systems, flue gas ducts and exhaust system where the design incorporates thermal expansion compensation, vibration damping or to take up misalignment. They are usually used in power generation, cement plants and HVAC systems industries.
